N/A10.5. Location Reporting
In news reporting, it should be clear to any reader or audience where a report is being written from, and if it includes location reporting. Where location reporting is constrained due to the mechanism or conditions of the facilitation this should be identified, e.g. an embed with an official army or independent travel with local militias. This may also include occasions where the reporting has been facilitated by a commercial, NGO or governmental organisation and labelling is necessary for transparency.
Is location reporting identified in your content?
YesDo your Editorial Guidelines ensure that any constraint on location reporting be explained in the report or in the context of its publication?
YesIf you want to publish additional information, please provide it here.
"The reader should understand the geographical context of any report: if the information in the material pertains to a specific locality or region, the editorial team is obligated to indicate the exact location from which the content is being transmitted. This is necessary to prevent the audience from forming a generalized impression that the events concern a broader area or a larger group of people than is actually the case. For example, news about an epidemic outbreak in one village should not be presented as "the entire Mykolaiv region is affected by an epidemic."
"However, in certain cases, indicating the exact location from which the content is transmitted may be restricted to ensure the safety of journalists, participants in the events, or other individuals. Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine has been under a state of martial law as decreed by the President of Ukraine. In situations of heightened risk to life and health, the editorial team may decide not to disclose the specific location of the event or subject in the material, in compliance with legal requirements. In such cases, it is important to strike a balance between providing sufficient context and adhering to safety regulations."
Do your Editorial Guidelines require transparency where a location report has been facilitated by an external body?
YesIf you want to publish additional information, please provide it here.
"If access to the location from which the content is transmitted or to the information itself was provided with the assistance of external bodies (such as military, governmental, municipal, or international organizations), the editorial team must ensure transparency in this process. The material should specify how or through whose assistance access to the information or location was obtained. The reader should understand that the journalist did not have complete freedom of movement and could only observe and gather data on those aspects that were accessible within the scope of the granted access. Such transparency will help build audience trust and uphold journalistic standards of objectivity and impartiality."
