16. Professionalism in the Media Outlet

16.1. Recruitment and Training

There shall be professional guidelines for the recruitment and training of editorial staff. This includes responsibilities for implementing diversity policy and staff welfare. Recruitment policy, (use of open competition etc.) and staff welfare principles should be publicly available.

The staff selection and recruitment process at the LRT is guided by the principles of professionalism, transparency, independence, and is aligned with the LRT Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy.

LRT applies uniform, objective and impartial job-related professional criteria for the selection and recruitment of staff, except as provided for in the LRT Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy.

The planning and implementation of LRT staff development shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions and principles of the LRT Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy: all employees shall be given equal opportunities to develop at work, to improve their qualifications, to retrain, to gain practical work experience, to participate in development programmes, to fulfil their professional and subject-specific potential, and to develop a career based on their professional competences, experience and abilities.

In addition, familiarising employees with the provisions of the LRT Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, as well as educating them on the implementation of its principles, is an integral part of the LRT employee development system. These principles are introduced during general recruitment training and are also integrated into professional development, leadership and management competence programmes.

16.2. Working Conditions, Contract Policy and Labour Relations

Journalistic principles and practice should be supported by the organisational environment including protection for journalistic integrity through adherence to labour laws and regulations, transparency of contract policy and freedom to organise. The duration or nature of the contract should not inhibit a journalist from operating in an ethical manner and the organisation structure should protect that principle.

16.3. Staff Welfare

Responsibility for the welfare of staff and those contracted on a freelance basis should be an important part of a Media Outlet’s role. Organisational Editorial Guidelines should be protective against any form of discrimination and supportive of equality of opportunity. It should ensure safety at work and in the working environment (including remote and online) and have guidelines, which support staff who have been exposed to material of a sensitive or upsetting nature or have suffered physical or psychological harm in the course of their work.

The LRT applies the same selection criteria and conditions for recruitment on the basis of objective and impartial professional criteria. Questions to candidates regarding gender, race, sexual orientation, etc., are not allowed.

In addition, gender-neutral language and wording of job titles are used in job application calls.

In the event of physical/psychological harm to an employee, the LRT provides employees with private health insurance. The insurance covers psychological/psychotherapeutic consultations, so employees can seek urgent help from specialists.

The LRT also organises special training to strengthen employees’ psychological health.

Methodical recommendations are available for journalists and editors who face online abuse and harassment.
